The Healing Road Map
How We Diagnose and Treat Inflammatory and Autoimmune Conditions
At our practice, we help tired, foggy, inflamed people reclaim their health.
We do this by following a road map that I created based on thousands of appointments over twelve years of practice, and a lifetime of study in integrative medicine.
If you’re tired, foggy, and inflamed, this road map is for you.
Most of our patients come to see us when they’re somewhere between 0 and 70% of their full capacity. Some of them are barely functional. They’re getting through the days, but they’re not really living. Their labs are often normal, which doesn’t make sense to them. They’re often dependent upon medications, and they’re worried about the future.
They’ve usually “tried everything.” They’re used to trying something, seeing an improvement, and then watching it fade away. They wonder if they’ll ever be well again.
But the most important thing they have in common is a belief that their bodies can heal and a determination to do whatever it takes to make that a reality.
There’s one concept that I share with them to start their journey, so that they understand the process at its core.
That concept is “repair deficit.”
Repair Deficit: Why You’re Tired, Foggy, and Inflamed
We think of health like a bank account.
Toxins, stress, and infections wear that bank account down. These are your withdrawals. Every night of sound sleep, every healthy meal, and every positive action you take toward better health - these are deposits.
When damage accumulates faster than your body can repair it, a repair deficit develops.
What happens when that repair deficit persists and grows for a long time?
People become tired, foggy, and inflamed. They wind up with diagnoses like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, Hashimoto’s, Grave’s, lupus, Sjogren’s, and more. These are autoimmune diseases. They are the inevitable result of repair deficit when it grows big enough and persists for long enough.
Most people are told that autoimmune diseases are like lightning. They strike without warning or reason. But we all know that lightning strikes aren’t actually random. That’s why you don’t climb up on your roof with a large antenna during thunder storms (right?!).
If you’re tired, foggy, and inflamed, then I assure you there are reasons. Your symptoms aren’t random bad luck. And there’s a way to reclaim your well-being. This road map is where I recommend that everyone start.
The Process: Nourish, Detoxify, Purify
We follow a clear process to help patients reclaim their health.
That process grew out of my observation that disease always seemed to come back to the same root causes - nutritional deficiencies, toxins and stress, and infections.
If you want to reclaim your health, you have to nourish, detoxify, and purify, in that order.
Nourish means giving the body what it needs. Everything your body takes in, from light to food, can nourish it or poison it. We have to nourish the body for it to heal.
Detoxify means to remove what’s destroying the body. This includes both toxins and stress, which fundamentally wear the body down in the same way. There are many hidden toxins and stresses in our modern world that we have to minimize, mitigate, or eliminate in order to reclaim our health.
Purify means to use targeted therapies to purge the body of infections. This step comes last because of what it can cost the body, and because the body often does this naturally once you nourish and detoxify it. Most of our patients never need antibiotics, antifungals, or antiparasitics, but for those that do, they are life-changing.
What each of us needs is different, and what you need can change on a daily or weekly basis. Reclaiming your health isn’t the work of a day, a week, or a month. It’s a daily commitment to a way of life. Once you make the change, you’ll be glad you did and you’ll never go back to the old way of doing things.
Nourish, detoxify, and purify are our process. Beyond this process, we need a framework that turns theory into practice.
The Five-Part Framework
I interview patients, friends, and colleagues regularly on my podcast for a series we call, “Stories of Hope, Stories of Healing.”
I interview patients every day in our practice and, when they tell me they are feeling better, I ask a simple, but profound question.
“What gets the credit?”
They almost always say the same thing.
“I’m not sure.” Followed by something like, “I guess all of it together.”
Isn’t that how everything worth doing works?
What gets the credit for a 4.0 GPA? What gets the credit for a happy marriage? What gets the credit for stable, healthy, happy children? What gets the credit for a smooth-running car, lawnmower, or weed wacker?
It’s never just “one thing.” There are no silver bullets when it comes to getting well (but there are shiny objects - more on this later).
I find that most frameworks are missing critical components of the puzzle. I created one that I felt was both simple and comprehensive.
Here’s our five-part framework:
Principles
Essentials
Hazards
Diagnostics
Therapeutics
If you want masterclasses in each of these, check out our Stories of Hope, Stories of Healing series on my podcast.
Why these five?
Principles are how we think, behave, and what we believe. Without the right principles of medicine, we’re doomed to fail. I start with principles because I noticed that the patients who got the best results were the most principled, and patients who got the worst results often had toxic, negative beliefs about themselves and others.
Essentials are what make us healthy. They are “essential” to who and what we are. They are what people mean when they say, “a healthy diet and lifestyle.” But as you might guess, it’s a bit more complicated than just “get 10,000 steps a day and eat a balanced diet.”
Hazards are the things that make us sick, no matter what we do. We must minimize, mitigate, and eliminate them in order to be healthy. Hazards are all around us in our modern world, from artificial light at night to toxins in our air, water, and food.
Diagnostics are tests and imaging (X-rays, CTs, and so on), as well as vital signs, physical exam findings, and more. If a doctor orders it or performs it to determine what to do next, then it’s a diagnostic. We need diagnostics to help us make better decisions.
Therapeutics are the things we do, above and beyond a healthy diet and lifestyle, to achieve and maintain excellent health. At our practice, we use a combination of light, nutritional supplements, and medications in order to help patients reclaim their health.
I’ve found that most patients are at least vaguely aware of these five elements of health. I’ve also found that most of them have a lot of room for improvement in some or all of them. And helping them figure out where and what to improve is what I’m most passionate about.
Here are a few case studies to show you why I’m so passionate about this.
Real Case Studies
Patients at our practice sometimes join me as podcast guests to tell their stories of hope and healing. You can listen to all of these episodes wherever you listen to podcasts - the podcast is called, “Integrative Medicine with Dr. Leland Stillman.”
Here are a few episodes that show what’s possible:
Meredith was so exhausted she could barely function as a mother of three. Diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome and told there was no cure. Lab work identified the deficiencies and imbalances driving her collapse. She fixed diet, lifestyle, and environment, and despite “trying everything” she still felt stuck. Then she joined our practice and made a complete recovery. She’s now symptom-free and sharing what she learned to heal herself on her podcast and through her social media. We recorded a two-part podcast on her journey. Listen to episode 1, and episode 2 here on Substack, or search for “Integrative Medicine with Dr. Leland Stillman” wherever you listen to podcasts.
Emily had severe myasthenia gravis. Drugs failed. Surgery failed. Testing identified clear nutrient deficiencies — B-6, carnitine, magnesium, zinc — and we built her protocol from those findings. As her repair capacity improved, her body began eliminating heavy metals it hadn’t been able to clear before. Hair testing documented the elimination of massive amounts of aluminum, copper, and mercury over 18 months. She went from symptomatic and unable to conceive to symptom-free and pregnant. She has been off all drugs for over two years. She trusted the process even when progress felt slow. We recorded a podcast episode about her journey, listen here on Substack or wherever you prefer to listen to podcasts.
Kenna had severe mold toxicity thanks to a water-damaged apartment. She was struggling to stand, see, and do simple daily tasks like laundry and doing the dishes. Her body was severely depleted of minerals and full of mold toxins. We created a personalized supplement protocol for her and in just five months she had made a full recovery. Now, Kenna works at our practice and is training to be one of our health coaches. We recorded a podcast episode about her journey, listen here on Substack or wherever you prefer to listen to podcasts.
There are many more stories like this on my podcast. I hope you’ll take a listen to them and be encouraged.
What This Looks Like
At our practice, we start with a comprehensive evaluation, including labs and a review of diet and lifestyle. We take a hard look a medications and supplements you’re on, then personalize recommendations to you. We don’t just manage medications and supplements. We also help you determine the optimal diet and lifestyle for your unique context.
We test labs as often as quarterly. Why? Because labs change. One of the top reasons patients seek our help is that they’ve had labs and tried supplement or medication regimens that were “one-size-fits-all,” only to be disappointed. The truth is you need to trend labs to see how patients are responding to therapy, otherwise you won’t know what’s working and what’s not.
If you want to learn more about our process, listen to my podcasts with Meredith, Emily, and Kenna.
Is This the Path for You?
If you’re:
Willing to follow a structured program, not bounce between random hacks and protocols.
Willing to take supplements and change my diet and lifestyle if that’s what my case requires.
Ready to show up and take ownership of my health, not outsource it completely to someone else.
Willing to work a plan for at least 90 days (there are no short-cuts).
Open to using labs and data to guide my next steps instead of guessing.
Want one clear framework to follow, not conflicting advice from multiple practitioners.
More afraid of staying stuck at 0–70% than of making changes.
Then this process is for you, and you’re ready for it.
